Toilet Training

Toilet training your child can be a seemingly overwhelming experience. The good news is, is that it doesn’t have to be!

At Thomas Buxton Primary School, we strongly believe that parents and carers are the best people to support children in meeting this important developmental milestone. We ask that families prepare children to start Nursery by being fully toilet trained and confident in using toilets when out and about. We understand that children may still need some support if they have just turned 3 years old when starting school Nursery.

However, every child is different and if you have a child with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities), this may not be the case at all. It can take them much longer to be ready. Please talk to school staff if you are concerned that your child may be delayed due to additional needs.

With this in mind, please find some links below that will take you to a variety of different websites which offer practical advice and tips for how to start toilet training with your child(ren). It is not an exhaustive list, but we hope that it will help you to get started and give you the confidence to enable your child to go to the toilet independently. There are also many books on the subject available in both audio and written formats.

If you need any further support and/or advice, please speak to your GP or Health Visitor. Alternatively, you can speak to Miss Measures, EYFS Phase Leader or the Miss Rogers AHT & SENDCo.
