Black Lives Matter: 500 word story writing Competition!

This week you have the opportunity to enter a writing competition. 500 Words is the world’s largest story-writing competition for children. Past competitions have included themes such as climate change and technology and this week the theme is the Black Lives Matter Movement.

The deadline is 11:59pm on Friday 3rd July 2020. Children must write a story of no more than 500 words that responds to any of the themes surrounding the Black Lives Matter movement.

Ideas to get you started:

You may consider a narrative that has a theme such as equality, fairness, kindness or friendship, it could be set in a school or on holiday.

You may wish to tell a story that tells a story of achievements made by significant black figures in Science, Maths, Art, Sport or any other subject. The protagonist could be significant figure from real-life e.g. Mae Jemison, Katherine Johnson, Steve McQueen or Muhammad Ali – there are thousand more to choose from or it could be an imaginary person.

You may like to tell a historical narrative that celebrates the contributions made by the Windrush generation or imagine what it was like for people travelling from the Caribbean between 1948 and 1971. What was the atmosphere like on board the ship? What was the experience like once they arrived in England – was it positive or negative? https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/43793769

You could also tell a story that tells the story of the fight for justice. You may like to tell a story that refers to more recent campaigns for justice e.g. the removal of statues or the returning of objects in museums to their place of origin.

Windrush Day 2020

On Monday 22nd June Britain will celebrate Windrush day. It was on this day, 72 years ago that hundreds of people arrived from the Caribbean to start a new life in Britain.

Why did they come here?

In 1948, Britain was trying to recover from World War II. Thousands of buildings had been bombed, many of houses were destroyed and the country needed to be rebuilt. There was also many jobs in the National Rail, the NHS and public transport that needed to be filled. Britain needed help. In the Caribbean, lots of young men and women had served in the British armed forces to help Britain win the war. This was because they were part of Britain’s empire- they were under British rule. After the war, some of these young people decided that they would come to Britain and help to rebuild the country. They were making a tremendous sacrifice. They were leaving their homes, family and safety to help Britain recover from the devastation of war.

How did they get to Britain?

They got on a ship – the Empire Windrush – which left the Caribbean to travel thousands of miles across the Atlantic ocean. This was the first time so many Caribbean people had come to live in Britain although people from the Caribbean had been coming to Britain long before that. Many more people from the Caribbean arrived in the following years. It was 22 June 1948 when the Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury Docks in Essex. The Windrush Generation includes anyone who migrated to Britain from the Caribbean between 1948-1973.

What was life like when they got here?
Passengers on the windrush were told that they would be welcome when they came to Britian but many people discovered that life in Britain wasn’t easy. When the passengers landed they didn’t always get the friendly welcome they had hoped for. Many of them experienced racism and discrimination and often found it hard to get a proper home to live in and to make friends with British people. It also wasn’t always easy for the new arrivals to get jobs. Some companies said they didn’t want black people to work for them. Later many of their children were bullied at school because of the colour of their skin. Some of them suffered racial attacks and in later years there were riots in cities across Britain.

What problems have they faced recently?

Recently, the government was forced to apologise for what has been called the ‘Windrush Scandal’, in which people who had lived in Britain ever since migrating all those years ago have been wrongly arrested, denied legal rights, sometimes even deported from the UK. They were told that they were living in Britain illegally. Many people were angry about their treatment and demanded that the government take action and investigate. The government finally realised that they had made a terrible mistake. They admitted that many people had been treated unfairly and some received apology letters. Today the government are still trying to resolve and repair the damage that was done.

Why do we remember them?

The Windrush generation are an important part of British history. They helped to transform Britian in to the multiracial and multicultural country it is today and helped rebuild it after the devastation of World War II. Their role in creating a more diverse and tolerant society has shaped Britain in to the country it is today. Windrush day is day that we celebrate the contributions of the Windrush generation and their descendants.

Brighten the day of staff at Royal London Hospital

Today we received an email from a senior nurse at the Royal London Hospital who is part of the team supporting the Adult Critical Care Unit through the COVID 19 Pandemic. 

The hospital has received a number of unexpected letters/pictures/poems from local school children and wanted to thank everyone who has been part of this as the positive impact on wellbeing this is having on staff across the Royal London Hospital is unmeasurable.

Summer Term

Hello from all the TBP Team.

We hope you have managed to rest and stay well over the Easter Holiday.  This week we will resume uploading tasks to the year group blog pages. Tomorrow there will be new Reading, Writing, Maths, P4C and RRS activities. New Bug Club and Mathletics activities will also be available.

Lots of you have used the class chat pages to keep in contact with your friends and we would encourage you to continue posting on there. Remember all comments have to be approved by your teacher so they will not appear straight away.

Well done to everyone who completed the Easter Holiday Pick and Mix activities. If you can please share any pictures or work through the year group emails which your teacher will check everyday. The new Pick and Mixes for Summer Term will be posted on here soon.

Tower Hamlets Creative Writing Competition: Winner!

Earlier this year, pupils were invited to enter the Tower Hamlets Creative Writing Competition organised by the Schools Library Service. We are thrilled to announce that Ruben in Turpin class has been selected as one of the winners and will take part in a prize-giving ceremony in November and will have his work published in the winners’ book. Have a read below of Ruben’s fantastic entry:

James’ Hidden Island

This hidden island is a place no-one dares to go. It is filled with lava, mountains, and creatures alien to our kind. The kingdom floats by the levitational powers of the mighty jewel. If anyone would dare to lay their eyes on the jewel, death would be upon them. The jewel shall stay there.

Until now.

It can’t be taken.

Until now.

It has to stay there.

Until now.

James was a lonely child, who had nothing to do with his time. He wasn’t respected by his family members. His aspiration was to climb the highest mountain in the world. Mount Everest. He was only 14 years old but had a big ambition. His parents didn’t agree with his hobbies. He was counting the days until the Summer holidays. He had been longing to do to Greece, his home country. It was the only place he felt joy. He hated flights as the food was nauseating. He hated being patted down and having his stuff rummaged through by total strangers.

It was the final week running up to James’ flight to Greece and he was starting to fret. His trip to Greece was only a week long, he doubted that he actually had clothes for a week. But it would all be worth it in the end. It would all be worth it.

Those days passed like a daydream. It was time to board the plane and James’ anxiety went through the roof. In his bag, he had all of his necessities including a book passed down from generations before him. The flight was going swiftly until the lights blacked out. It was James’ worst nightmare. He looked out of the window. Nothing there. Pitch black. He heard heterodynes as if there was no-one left in the cabin crew. Then snap: he fainted.

As he was waking up, he felt as if he was on another planet. He may have been the only survivor on the plane. Horrifying goblin-like creatures surrounded him. Was this a hoax? He was too scared to move. Thoughts rushed in and out of his brain like a waterfall. For the first time in his life he actually missed his dear mother. Their language, to James, was balderdash. He had wished that this was all just a dream and he could wake up and be completely fine. He wished.

But that isn’t how this story ends. His biggest desire was to be saved. Or be knighted king. But that would be a bit ambitious. What happened next wasn’t what he desired. They put him in a crystal orb and fed him two buckets of fish heads a week.

The end… Or is it?

Sports Day

At home, your local area or in school

As you know we’re in the midst of global pandemic but that doesn’t mean we can’t have our Sports’ Day.  I have put together some fun activities you can do at home, in your local area with family or in school with your teachers.

Challenges:

  • There are 12 challenges to attempt
  • A bit like Bingo, as well as the points you will gain for your challenges, you will also gain extra points for completing 1 full row of activities (single line), 2 full rows of activities (double line) and all the activities (FULL HOUSE)
  • Very little equipment is needed for the challenges
  • You can complete them in any order you like
  • The main thing is to keep fit and have a good old laugh whilst doing it

Points:

  • Points are awarded as stated on the challenges
  • 10 extra points are awarded for completing a single line
  • 25 extra points are awarded for completing a double line
  • 50 extra points are awarded for completing a FULL HOUSE

Safety:

  • Please make sure you warm up before completing the challenges that you need to be physically active for
  • If completing any challenges outside, make sure you follow the social distancing rules
  • Make sure the space you are completing the challenges in, is appropriate and safe

Apart Together: exploring emotions through art

None of us have ever experienced anything like the Lockdown we have been living in for the last few weeks. Coronavirus is a new disease, and the unknown can be very scary. There have been good days and bad days, and we’ve all found it difficult to explain our feelings at times.

Drawing or representing our feelings through art can be a really helpful way of exploring our emotions.

We are launching an art project to explore our experiences of lockdown, and the different emotions we have all been feeling. Find out more about the project.
